BOLSHOI BALLET GALA OPENING EXQUISITE: Review Le Corsaire 2103

THE BOLSHOI BALLET Opening Night in Australia, exclusive to QPAC in Brisbane was one extraordinary, memorable experience of Russian culture at its best.

A full house of some 1500 patrons in black-tie attire stood to both the Australian and Russian national anthems as entree to an unforgettable performance of perfection in ballet, music and set of Le Corsaire. Every aspect of the Ballet from dancers to sets to orchestration was embraced and resoundingly applauded by an awestruck audience.

The Principal Dancer, Maria Alexandrova captured the audience with her presence in the tradition of Fonteyn. Not only were her ballet moves par excellence and bewitching, but her acting expressions captured the character and expressions of Medora. Her pirouettes in particular were mesmerising and unbelieveably perfect. The pas de deux  with Principal Dancer, Vladislav Lantratov as Conrad was masterful and gracefully streamlined.

With some 100 Dancers, many individuals' skills and refinement were showcased throughout the performance. The Sets and themes were so realistic, rich and grande, one was transported direct to that place in time - fairytale magic.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Sorokin (again, a product of mighty Russia) enhanced the ballet's beauty and majesty and gave it a rich voice. Sorokin's perfection in co-ordinating the timing of orchestral phrases to dance moves was truly reverential. The Harp solo which accompanied Alexandrova's solo ballet minuet in Scene 2, Act I and solo pirouettes across the entire stage in Act II were ethereal. The composer was Riccardo Drigo (1847-1930). Others in the gallery of composers for Le Corsaire included Adolphe Adam, Leo Delibes and Cesare Pugni. The music for this production has been described as a quilt of scores from these great composers.

To add to the panache and ceremony of the Gala performance of The Bolshoi Ballet, the foyer ceiling of QPAC was dressed in colourful tutus and dangling ballet shoes to welcome The Bolshoi to Brisbane, Australia. The superior planning, co-ordination and polish of the Australian Producers and the QPAC Team was well rewarded with deafening audience applause at every sequence throughout the performance. Hail Bolshoi & QSO !

Le Corsaire Performances  are sold out till 5th June but it is followed by The Bright Stream with tickets still available 7th-9th June.
